international flavors

Joshua and I tried the brand-new creperie in downtown Matthews this morning! Royal Cafe and Creperie had its “opening soon” sign up for a while, and every time I walked into Matthews, I’d check to see if they had a date yet. Sure enough, yesterday, we saw the grand opening announcement for today.

We were their second and third customers, respectively. The choices were diverse – I wasn’t expecting such a wide variety of savory crepes! We both ordered on the sweet side, probably because we had that mindset walking in, but their nods to breakfast burritos and huevos rancheros alike sounded quite delectable. The coffee was also quite good, with lattes far exceeding what Starbucks has to offer, and definitely comparable to Dilworth Coffeehouse, right down the street.

The owners/operators are a mother-daughter team + the daughter’s husband, and the crepe recipe is generations old, from Russia. Interesting, right? Who knew Russia had crepes? Well, probably some of you did. They’re called blinis there – that much I did know. I wish I could try everything on their menu, but since I try to stick to a gluten-free lifestyle, crepes are probably going to be a rare treat for me. Joshua can help support them more personally, though. šŸ˜‰ If you live in the area, you should definitely give them a try.
