This evening, I attended Bobby McFerrin’s concert in Greenville, SC. My brother asked me if I’d like to go, kind of out of the blue. Kind of like it was on a whim. I looked him up, thought he sounded interesting enough to pay $10 for a ticket, and said sure.
I was blown away.
I don’t think there’s a better way to describe the man except to say he’s an exceptional vocal acrobat. His voice is elastic. It can slide smoothly along some of the deepest bass passages I’ve heard someone sing since Rigoletto, and then pop up to falsetto to rival the Vienna Boys Choir. At a moment’s notice! Always perfectly controlled, perfectly on key. Mr. McFerrin “plays” his voice like my brother plays the piano.
Quite impressive. Next time, front row seats.
